My Artistic Story
I always loved creating art throughout my childhood. I spent hours in my room drawing and inventing. I just thought of it as a relaxing way to pass time. It amounted to poster contests awarded and work displayed down school hallways. While in elementary school I scored high enough on creative cognativity tests to participate in, Olympics of the Mind, which depened my interest. Creating art even got me through my awkward middle school years. Art became my theraputic outlet. After having art in my life for many years, it became a part of my identity. I didn't realize the true purpose of this gift until my first highschool art class with Horace Miller at Westerville North High School. I sat in his room quietly intimidated by his stern demeanor. He was a no non-sense kind of guy but cared about his students. After turning in my first drawing assignment he called me up to his desk. I nervously approached pondering what I could've done to be in trouble. Caught by suprise, he began by saying, you have talent. After four years of his instruction and spending every spare moment in his room, I was convinced I too wanted to be an art teacher. To have such an impact on a young life must be so rewarding. So, I went to Ohio State to pursue my Bachelor's Degree in Art Education.
As a teacher I hope to inspire and positively influence my students. Whether it has an impact on their art or by having an adult to go to for support . I encourage my students to have strong work ethic and to enjoy life. I work everyday to provide meaningful and challenging experiences for my students. I want to help them learn to express their ideas creatively and to establish their voice. I guide them to this discovery through an experimentation with a variety of techniques and materials. They also learn how to use composition to visually communicate and organize their ideas. Lastly a good investigation of art history and current issues gives them something to respond too. Art is truely an integrated and differentiated curriculumn that adapts to the needs and interests of every student and requires one to use the highest level thinking skills.
After teaching high school art classes for 13 years, two of those in Florida and eleven of those at my alma mater, I am still as passionate about its pupose and importance. Unfortunetly convicing everyone else isn't always as easy. The arts are the first programs to be cut from public schools in fiscal emergency. I have experienced the affects on many occasions. This year, 2012, the impact has left me searching for a new job, maybe even a new career. Whatever my career may be I hope to still apply my creative gifts. I have committed to being a life long learner who will continue to develop. Check back with me for updates.
