Photography
My photography is the way I observe the world and collect visual information. Most of my photographs are taken locally but some are from trips to South Carolina and Pittsburgh. I mostly photograph what I know from personal experience and think about how I can represent it in new create ways. I would love to travel to exotic places and take pictures but I think it is easy to be a photographer when the beautiful and unique scenery is created for you. I also worry that it would be a bit lifeless because I would not have a connection to the place. I use a 35mm Minolta x-700 film camera and a Sony a-200 DSLR. I use photoshop to lightly edit the images afterward.
Painting
Painting is used for my true personal expression. The brush running across the canvas and the smell of linseed oil captivates me and I cannot stop painting once I start until I am finished. Often times this behavior can keep me from starting or ever finishing a painting. I don't like to over work or control my painting and like to keep my strokes loose. I work with oils, acrylic, and watercolor. As you can see my palettes tend to get pretty messy. My abstract work is a brighter color palette and my natural paintings are a more subdued palette. Most of the paintings are personal narratives about my life as a daughter, a woman, a wife and a mother.
Drawing
Drawing for me is used mostly for sketching through ideas and practicing my skill for observational drawing, perspective and proportion. I replicate the world with dimensional shading using, chalks, charcoals, pencils, pens and pastels. The medium is very controlled and precise. It takes a lot more time to spend on one drawing, more than I have these days.
